The Country School is a private, outdoor-based school for K-8 and a select number of advanced four-year-old students.

We believe that the outdoors offers an unparalleled learning environment. Through direct interaction with nature, students develop observational skills, critical thinking, and a deep understanding of ecological principles.

Every child is unique and learns at their own pace. Our curriculum is designed to be flexible, allowing each student’s interests to guide their learning. We prioritize experiential, hands-on activities that resonate with each child’s innate curiosity.

Our academic purpose is to educate and inspire our students to be confident problem-solvers, who are able to work collaboratively using practical skills, communication, and critical thinking, and who enjoy and celebrate the natural and animal world.

Students work at their own academic pace but are grouped into three main groups. Any individual student can join a higher group to work above their own grade level. This is a unique meeting of student needs, abilities, and talents, to ensure they reach their full potential.
Located on 14.5 acres just outside of Iowa City, Iowa, The Country School offers children a wide range of outdoor activities and learning. The acreage includes the school/theatre, two pastures, a gazebo, a flower garden, sand mountain, a vegetable garden, dragon mounds, pirate ships, hobbit house, potion shop, cow and sheep barn, chicken house, small orchard, small village within an evergreen grove, a pond, and our farmhouse

“At this unique and magical school, where learning doesn’t just come from books but also from the soil, trees, animal care, seasons, and shared wonder, they’ve created something rare.”
“This school is more than a place of learning. It’s a living, breathing community.”
“Our children aren’t just getting an education—they’re growing in wisdom, empathy, and connection.”
The Country School is currently accepting students for the 2025-2026 school year.
